About Me
Why I'm Sharing What I've Learned About Fiber Optics in Spain
My Background
I'm James Mitchell, a network engineer who's been working with telecommunications infrastructure for over eight years. I moved to Madrid in 2019 from London, initially for a project that was supposed to last six months. Five years later, I'm still here, and Spain has become both my home and my area of expertise.
My career started in network design and optimization. I've worked with ISPs, helped design fiber rollouts, and consulted on infrastructure projects. But what really shaped my perspective was experiencing Spain's internet infrastructure as both a professional and a consumer.
Why I Started This Site
When I first arrived in Madrid, I struggled to find reliable information about fiber optics in Spain. Most content was either marketing material from providers or generic technical articles that didn't address real-world questions. I found myself answering the same questions repeatedly from friends, colleagues, and people I met.
I realized there was a gap between what providers advertise and what people actually experience. Having worked on both sides—designing networks and using them daily—I wanted to share insights that bridge that gap.
My Approach
Everything I write here is based on real experience. I've tested connections across multiple Spanish cities. I've worked with the technology professionally. I've lived with both ADSL and fiber as a daily user. This isn't theoretical knowledge—it's practical, tested, and honest.
I'm not affiliated with any provider. I don't receive commissions or incentives. My goal is simply to share what I've learned so others can make informed decisions.
What You'll Find Here
This site focuses on three things:
- Real performance data: Actual speeds, latency, and reliability from testing
- Honest cost analysis: Not just monthly bills, but total cost of ownership
- Future considerations: How fiber prepares you for technologies that are coming
I update articles as I learn more and as the technology evolves. If something changes in the Spanish fiber market, I'll reflect that here.
Beyond Work
When I'm not working with networks or writing about them, I enjoy exploring Spain's cities, trying local food, and learning Spanish (still working on it). I'm also an amateur photographer, which means I'm constantly uploading large image files—another reason I appreciate fiber's upload speeds.
